Derbyshire: A Summer Guide

Derbyshire is a beautiful place with plenty to do and see. We find that you can always find something to do, no matter what time of the year it is.  In fact, at the end of last year, we wrote a post informing you of all our favourite things that can be done in the winter months.

As summer is approaching, we thought it would be a good idea to write another guide, but this time focus on everything that you can enjoy during the summer!

 Take a Sightseeing Tour

There are a few different sightseeing tours that you can enjoy whilst in Derbyshire; from Victorian tram tours, to historical walks.

One of our favourites is in Buxton, which is a small spa town in Derbyshire. Here, you can experience a Victorian tram tour, in which you can take a journey back in time as a knowledgeable tour guide reveals all the historic facts of the town.

From the tram, you are able to stop and admire the landmarks and iconic buildings that are dotted around the area.

Visit a Theme Park

Gulliver’s Kingdom is the perfect day out for those who are looking for something to do with their children. Here, you can experience over 60 rides, attractions and shows, and there is bound to be something for everyone. Set on a beautiful hillside, you get stunning views whilst you enjoy a big adventure.

Toddlers to teenagers will love everything that this theme park has to offer, which is why it is considered one of the best days out for families in the UK.

Our personal favourite is the classic pirate ship! Ahoy matey!

Stop at a Farm

Matlock Farm Park is a wonderful day out for all the family. It is situated within a 600 acre working farm, and offers a range of activities. It gives children the chance to learn lots about the countryside, whilst enjoying the attractions.

The main attraction is the selection of animals to see, which includes meerkats, goats, sheep, turkeys and llamas. There is also an opportunity for children to pet rabbits and feed the young lambs (if the season permits).

For people who are planning a visit, you can also book riding lessons and pony trekking.

Go Windmill Hunting

Heage Windmill was built in 1797 and is the only working, stone towered, multi-sailed windmill in the whole of England. This alone makes it worth a visit!

The windmill is positioned deep in the countryside in Derbyshire, which means it guarantees beautiful views.

Visitors are invited on a guided tour, which lasts around 40 minutes. During this visit, you will be given lots of facts about both the history of the windmill and the work it still does.

Whilst this is a trip that may be more suited to those with older children, there are specific activities provided for young children!

Be sure to visit the shop before you leave, as you can purchase some of your own Heage Windmill flour.

Whether you choose to explore the places we have mentioned above, or you have ideas of your own, we believe that Derbyshire makes a fantastic holiday destination.
